5 Work At Home Rules To Abide By
So you have decided to launch out and work at home. Whether it is your own business or you are employed, doing work from home will pose it own set of challenges. Too many people who decide to work at home tend to believe that it’s going to be easy and that they are prepared only to find out otherwise. Be absolutely sure you have thought it through as you made find that to work at home is simply not for you.
There are certain rules you should abide by if you work at home or are considering it and you will do well to keep them in mind.
1. Remind yourself constantly, you are at work. Too many people who work at home tend to forget that they are really at work and only the location is different. So you can’t raid the fridge every chance you get, or keep putting things off, or constantly be entertaining your friends, do the work as if you were in an office elsewhere. Act as you would if you did not work at home.
2. Make up a ‘To be done today’ list. Before the start of the week make up a list of the things you need to get done for the coming weeks and fill each day the things that will make them possible, work on getting them done. Put a time period on each item if possible and work within it. Make sure each item on your list can realistically be done and commit to doing it. When you work at home this will save you a lot of time and keep you focused.
3. Set up some boundaries. When you work at home there needs to be a line drawn between your work and home life. When you are at work you are at work and when you are at home you are at home. So don’t be afraid to block people out, let your family know that not because you work at home doesn’t mean you are not at work. Tell them you prefer not to be disturbed when you are working. You can also set working hours for yourself and make it known to your family. Whatever you do make sure you set those boundaries. You work at home it is not a free for all.
4. Have a dedicated work area. Decide where in the home exactly you are going to work at home from. It must be an area that is conducive to the performance of your work. If you work at home and use your dining room table as your office area then you need to find somewhere else to work.
5. Enjoy what you are doing. If you are going to work at home make sure you do what it takes to enjoy it. You are not likely to do your work well if you do not enjoy it that is what makes you endure the challenges that come up from time to time when you work at home.
