Changing Consumer Patterns Could Mean Your Business Is Missing Out
Have you ever thought that Internet Marketing is like a bunch of people shuffling bits of paper and talking about how they get millions of dollars from stuffing envelops or emailing out a chain letter.
Well that was the way I saw the Internet. Gerry Harvey is an Australian Billionaire, who started a major chain of home furniture and computer stores which is now an international franchise, was interviewed and declared that there was no money to be made trying to sell goods on the Internet.
Times are changing, because people’s habits are changing. It is said that if a person does something for thirty days in a row it becomes a habit. This might not be totally true, doing something for thirty days in a row might be exhaustive for some people. However, children are going to school and playing around on computers for more than thirty months. At home, children have been playing around on the Internet now since the late 80s. What this means is there a large population coming into adulthood and expect to be able to buy and sell on the Internet. Older people are coming on line, because they think they are missing out. So they begin to buy on eBay.
Initially, there were great concerns about credit card fraud and privacy infringements, but these have been addressed and people are not only conditioned to using the Internet, but they are feeling safe transacting in cyberspace. The fact that banks have encouraged their clients to use Internet banking has also helped. Share trading is another factor that has helped people become familiar with the Internet. In fact, it is so easy to look up the Internet and get information that people are reading less books. Instead of waking up and turning on the television, the first thing that is turned on in many houses these days is the computer, as it is in my household.
It has been easy for the financial services industry to tap into the Internet and market their products. This along the with the media, free music and film downloads have largely helped in luring people to the Internet. Small businesses have had a great deal of difficulty of making their mark on the Internet, but this is changing as new techniques of marketing are being made available with the use technology that enables people to use video to promote what they are selling.
With video, the hype is no longer there, and what was once virtual reality is becoming more seemingly real. People are able to see what is really on offer and promoters cannot sensationalize a product beyond what it really is capable of doing. More and more people are beginning to trust the people they are interacting with, because now they can make personal judgments as to whether the person they are dealing with looks like a slick salesman or a down-to-earth person who really has a product worth buying. Consumer purchasing patterns are changing, and while a person might go and try out a bed at the local furniture store, if they can buy that same bed over the Internet for less, or with some other bonus added on, then the Internet marketer is the winner.
