“How can I get the most from my employees?” This is a universal question that I hear a lot. Business leaders don’t necessarily know how to motivate their employees to be their most productive and effective selves.
I’d be lying if I told you there was one easy answer…but you probably already knew there wasn’t!
The people in an organization are driven by the written, and more often unwritten, rules about behavior – what is and isn’t acceptable, what is and isn’t noticed, what is and isn’t rewarded, what is and isn’t valued by management, and what they can and can’t get away with. These “rules” create the driving force within an organization – the “organizational culture”.

I need to make a change in my company…How do I do it, and how do I manage it? This is a question I hear from business leaders every day… yet the question often comes to me after the fact… when people are up in arms and ready to bolt. A change can be something as simple as new stationery or as tumultuous as a merger or acquisition, and while the change is often seen by top leadership as necessary to move ahead of aggressive competitors, this is not always the case for employees. Why? I believe the answer is this - Your employees are not angry about the change itself… they are angry because they are often the last to hear, you did not get their buy-in, their vote didn’t count , and bam… Trust is shattered!”
Many business owners and managers don’t fully understand the value in finding, training and developing leaders in their organizations. This is especially true of small businesses.
For the most part, I think business leaders are afraid that if their employees turn into successful leaders then they’ll lose them. That’s a valid fear, but should not be a fear at all.
People fail to realize that the better leaders those below them are, the better they (themselves) perform and the better they (the other leaders below them) make those above them look. I.e. if the team is great, the leader looks great; if the team sucks, then the leader looks bad. It’s to every company’s benefit to develop leaders within.
